About Shout 85258

Shout is the UK’s first and only free, confidential, 24/7 text messaging support service for anyone who is struggling to cope.

We launched publicly in May 2019 and we’ve had more than 1.7 million conversations with people who are anxious, stressed, depressed, suicidal or overwhelmed and who need in-the-moment support.

As a digital service, Shout has become increasingly critical since Covid-19, being one of the few mental health support services able to operate as normal at this time.

About Mental Health Innovations

Shout is the first service from Mental Health Innovations – a digital mental health charity using digital innovation, data-driven analysis and the experience of clinical experts to improve the mental health of the UK population.

Mental Health Innovations was founded in November 2017, with the support of the Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales.

Shout was researched and developed with the Royal Foundation as a legacy of the Heads Together campaign and was set-up with a £2m grant from the Foundation.

How Shout is making an impact

Since our launch in May 2019, we now have:

  • 2,100 trained and active Shout Volunteers
  • 1.7 million text conversations with 540,000 children, young people and adults in distress
  • 2,000 conversations every day. We’re a 24/7 service and our texters contact us round the clock

The most common issues that arise during conversations are suicide (35%), depression (31%), anxiety (30%), relationships (25%), loneliness (16%) and self-harm (15%).

How our texters feel about the service

  • 86% say the conversation was helpful
  • 59% say they texted us because they didn’t have anyone else to talk to
  • 43% say it is the first time they have asked for help

Safeguarding at Shout

Safeguarding at Shout is in place to ensure the safety of the children and young people who text us. The law says that we must make sure that when you text us, we do what we can to protect you.
